Seeking/recognizing the root of a problem, ie., what the cause of the problem is rather than only recognizing/dealing with the symptoms.

The opposite would be 'superficial', or the 'bandaid' approach to solving problems. Most radicals would agree that it is important to deal with 'symptoms' (such as poverty, lack of health care) as well as deal with the cause of the problem (such as capitalism).
