Reports Back

1): Worked on getting calls to Senators and Representatives to vote against the “Dark Act,” which =did= pass the House but should face considerable difficulty in the Senate. Working in support of the Boxer-DeFazio Bill, the number of which didn’t know off-hand. Also, plans to attend a Bernie Sanders campaign kick-off, Wednesday, September 29th from 6 to 9 pm and a Permaculture program on Thursday.

2): Obtained Permaculture certification. Studying how to improve communication with the Roseland Community, which is challenging because of the diversity and immigration issues involved. Also, has been doing research on Mexico’s practices regarding farmer’s markets. Emphasized the need to approach the bilingual group in a way that emphasizes what they can do for themselves rather than what they should not do or what they should avoid. Additionally, mentioned utilizing the “World-Style Café” approach in teach-in groups, similar to that which is used by Community Organizing Groups like NBOP and NBSC. The W-SC approach is a give and receive approach rather than just a “passing down” approach.

3): Spent a lot of time contacting people via e-mail for help and support with the teach-in but phone calls have been more effective. Numerous contacts with KBBF regarding co-sponsorship but KBBF decided not to. Arranged 2 hour bilingual interview on KBBF with two of our media spokespeople. Contacted Bayer Farm who was recommended for the sustainability presentation at the teach-in, but has not responded back. Posted a mockup of press release and PSA on Titanpad to get us started on writing that together. The Press Release can be lengthened to include more group input. The PSA needs to stay short (60 seconds maximum). Preliminary versions of both will be distributed to our press lists on Thursday night before beginning summer break on Friday. Final press release and PSA will be translated and distributed in early September. Promoted the Renters’-Workers March on Wednesday, July 29th, starting at 5:30 pm in Roseland.

4): Worked on TPP Media Event and letter to the Editor. Continues to work on his GMO article about the “Soy Republic,” which encompasses 3 or 4 South American countries and the immediate surrounding areas of which have a 10-fold increase in cancer, which has been verified by about 160 medical doctors in the respective areas.

5): Contacted congressman about HR 1599. Was told always votes against such things. Gave input on the PSA. Purchased $5 in succulents from Jail Industries to propagate for plant sale.

6): Has been making calls to line up participants and sponsors in and for the September Bilingual Teach-in, has set up two interviews on Women's Voices (August 24th and September 21st) and a bi-lingual interview on KBBF. Arranging for location of teach-in.

7): Attended the Media Skills teach-in and has been working on the piece written for that on Fukushima.  Attended an event with delegates from Fukushima who spoke about their lives and children after the nuclear accident.

8): Working on the preliminary flyer for march on Wednesday. Editing and will post video from media skills teach-in. Hasn't found time to work on Spanish website page.

9): Arranging printing and will be distributing our teach-in flyers at the march on Wednesday.

AGENDA

Bilingual GMO Teach-in on 9/21

Teach-in Format
It was strongly recommended by that after the 20 minute film and 10 minute backyard sustainability demonstration that in lieu of the “Question and Answer” period there be a World-style Café follow-up approach, for more equitable and meaningful participation of the bilingual group.

Endorsement update
Contacted NBOP, who was very positive but has not yet replied back.  Will contact again and will contact GMO Free Sonoma County about endorsing the OSC bilingual teach-in.
(Note: Women's Voices has endorsed the teach-in.)
See above notes regarding KBBF interviews.

Press release & PSA are posted on Titanpad

Teach-in Location is tentatively Roseland Elementary School, but found the office closed until August 5th, when will call back.  $50-100 was allocated for location expenses to have ideal location for this event.

Preliminary bilingual flyers will be distributed at the Renters-Workers March on the 29th.  Flyers will be available at the PJC for everyone to take to their meetings, events, and bulletin boards.

New Spanish page on website.  Hasn’t had the opportunity to do much with it but will add a link to another web site.

Someone will check with Friedman’s about possible demonstration, and will check about utilizing a class location as an alternative location to the school for the teach-in.

Someone will check on endorsements and participate in interviews and will work on the bilingual GMO interview on KBBF on September 5th.

Two people will pass out preliminary bilingual teach-in leaflets at the March on Wednesday, July 29th.

Meeting ended at 9:30 PM.
